Issue: 9-1/2 May/2007

I confess that sometimes I run a little behind and, therefore, arrive at my destination late. This is nothing short of a sin in America, where we are obsessed with being on time. But isn't running a little late acceptable under certain circumstances? What if you could get off work early to see your child play baseball for 7 of the 9 innings? I maintain that, in cases like this, running late is better than not showing up at all.

When it comes to fighting childhood obesity, we are running late, because we didn't start soon enough. However, I do think we can catch up to where we need to be-provided we get moving now.

Setting the Example
By Joel K. Sims,  AIA

There are some folks who are running ahead of us and setting good examples to follow. Kim Pavlovich is one such example. She has run 26 marathons during her lifetime. Now, that's impressive! However, there is something more impressive about Kim! As principal of Jefferson Elementary School in Blaine, Minn., she has taken the initiative to promote fitness among her 740 students.

Once a week, after school, she leads the Jefferson Run/Walk Club that now consists of about 500 students! It started three years ago when she set out to do something with students that would help them get exercise. "I wanted to do something that had a positive impact on students. Since I have been a life-long runner, this seemed to be a natural event," she states.

The first year she was hoping to have about 30 kids show up. She was pleasantly surprised when about 120 students turned out! Currently there are 500 students, along with parents and teachers, involved in the club. In the one-half hour event, students cover 2 ½ to 3 miles as they run and/or walk.

In the June issue of Schooldesigner, we will hear what Kim would do to improve the exterior of her school. After all, well-designed schools can help fight childhood obesity.

Also running ahead of us on fighting childhood obesity and setting an example for others is Richmond, Va.-based BCWH Architects. The firm has worked with school board members from across the state to promote fitness in a unique way. During the annual VSBA (Virginia School Boards Association) Conference, many attendees participate in a 5K Run/Walk promoting physical activity in schools. BCWH encourages board members to use this as an opportunity to challenge the schools within their area to join in a physical activity at the same time. Schools participate in a similar physical activity on the same date as the conference's 5K trek. For example, students may run a mile, complete an obstacle course, or have a race.

These are just two examples out of many things being done around the country to promote fitness in schools.
Our upcoming  June newsletter will feature more examples of how school design can help fight childhood obesity.
More Examples are Needed
Every month, I receive e-mails from folks around the world who like the example SchoolDesigner.com is setting in promoting high-quality school design. Yet, we couldn't do what we do if not for you, the school designer community, first setting the example in creating high-quality schools. When I see great school projects or new Designer Professionals signing up on the site, I am inspired. Admittedly, the Website is filled with great projects, professionals, and products. Still, we need more, because the world needs more good examples.

If you have a great outdoor fitness example, send it to us. We will try to include it in May's issue-even if we are running a little late! Even late, we can still catch up on fighting childhood obesity.

We have made it very easy (and affordable) to become a Designer  Professional Member or a Product Sponsor. Just download the forms, fill them out, add some photos and send them to us. Do it today - you will be glad you did!
