The Hills Are Alive![]() BAR Architects415.293.5700 San Francisco, CA 94105 Designed around a central “town square,” the campus architecture incorporates a variety of flexible spaces reflective of the school’s multi-disciplinary approach to learning and emphasizing a strong connection to the natural environment. Main circulation is conceived as a public street forming a centralized backbone around which campus activities are organized. BAR Architects created the master plan and design of Sonoma Academy, a new private high school, to encourage frequent interaction between students, faculty and visitors throughout their daily use of the campus. Additional Info: Designed to be built in three phases to address increasing student enrollment, strategic financial goals and future growth, Phase 1 accommodates 300 students and includes classrooms. A gymnasium, library and 90-seat black box theatre. Phase 2 enables enrollment to grow to 450 students by the addition of a student services building, a 600-seat theatre, student dining facility and additional classrooms. Phase 3 provides the school the opportunity to expand with additional classrooms to support a total student population of 600. Each phase forms an integral part of the larger master plan and is designed to functionally and physically stand on its own. In this way, should future phases not be constructed, the campus functions as a completed entity. Materials: Board formed concrete Exposed steel structure Standing seam metal roof (cool roof) AEP Span Locally quarried stone Comments: "There is no doubt that wireless internet is becoming more common in schools. So whether it is hardwired or wireless internet access at informal student areas is imperative." Joel@schooldesigner.com | Hign School
