Through an interactive and collaborative planning process involving key stakeholders, design goals emerged: create a comprehensive, state-of-the-art middle school that will foremost support and enhance Lakeridge’s educational program, celebrate its unique cultures and traditions, and ultimately become a community landmark. Since 1978 Lakeridge Middle School has served the Sumner School District. The existing facility, however, has been slated for replacement and a new design is underway. There is both a responsibility and obligation for the new facility’s design to preserve and celebrate the school’s established heritage and culture.

Additional Info:

The school is organized to facilitate community use and access create a centralized social “heart” maximize daylighting and personalize the learning environment by “small learning communities”. The social “heart” of the school is centrally located and will be multi-functional, serving as a cafeteria and “Great Hall”, a public meeting space with a raised stage, and as both a formal and informal student gathering place. Beyond its role as a center of teaching and learning, the new Lakeridge Middle School must also serve as a center of community life. In this context the facility is being designed to allow for and maximize community use and partnerships, to be a source of community pride and to act as a natural extension of the character of the surrounding community.
