Earthworks is a hands-on learning environment that seeks to teach children how the “earth works.” It is located within a large subterranean complex, which allows the facility to take advantage of the natural insulative properties of a cave and offers students a memorable experience outside the classroom. The center hosts activities related to the five ecosystems soil, prairie, pond, cave and forest. Dioramas for each ecosystem lead directly to shelters for pedagogical experiments. Earthworks annually hosts 10,000 third and fourth-graders from all Kansas City, Missouri school districts.
