On the night of May 4, 2007 an EF5 tornado approximately 2 miles wide ravaged Greensburg, Kansas, destroying 95% of the City's homes and businesses. In the wake of the disaster it became apparent that changes would need to occur to sustain the town for future generations. The (K-12) school facility is designed to support Greensburg's newly adopted master plan and vision to be a model "eco-community". The school campus will be one of the first public buildings to be reconstructed and is being designed to LEED for Schools Platinum standards. Key sustainable strategies include: Geo-thermal HVAC systems, two 100K wind turbines, daylighting provided in all occupied spaces, proactive indoor environmental air quality design decisions, acoustical performance and thermal comfort options.

Additional Info:

The City of Greensburg has come together and embraced a vision not only to restore but to be restorative, providing a model for rural America and for the twenty-first century. The leadership of Unified School District (USD-422) is joining this unprecedented initiative in developing facilities that will provide exceptional learning and teaching environments, inspire students, and serve as a continuing source of pride and value for the community.
