Daybreak Elementary School and Community CenterBrixen & Christopher ArchitectsIt was essential that the visual design for this shared space project accommodate the scale of the residential neighborhood. Classroom clusters were designed to facilitate team teaching with inclusive common/flexible teaching areas. Each cluster expressed in the building form reduced the visual scale avoiding the big box expression prevalent in the design of schools. The project was designed for energy efficiency, low maintenance, and sustainability. Daylighting concepts and a ground source heat pump were incorporated. Additional Info: The school and community center was designed as a single building consisting of shared spaces. The project, designed for energy efficiency and low maintenance, features concrete masonry exterior walls, metal roofing and siding, and insulated low E glazing. Extensive application of daylighting has been achieved through carefully located windows with shading devices for seasonal sunlight control. Other green aspects earning LEED Silver include: Light colored pavements or shaded with trees used to reduce heat island effects. Stormwater runoff being controlled and decreased. Erosion and sedimentation carefully controlled during construction. Outdoor water use reduced using native vegetation and high efficiency irrigation. Indoor water use reduced using low-flow fixtures. A ground source heat pump utilizing the earths temperature for heating and cooling. Over 57% of the construction waste generated was sorted and recycled. Construction involved high level of materials with recycled content. Use of local construction materials, reducing transportation distances and supporting the local economy. Low emitting materials used throughout. Materials: Concrete Masonry Units Buehner Block Co.
