Design started with three initiatives: maximizing playground areas and minimizing wasted space; minimizing traffic congestion, and providing security while retaining an open, welcoming campus. By concentrating on sustainable design and the protected open spaces, designers create a safe elementary school haven in an urban setting. Additional Info: ES #9 includes 26 classrooms in a new, three-story building with a library, multipurpose room, administrative area, and kitchen. A sweeping campus entry welcomes students and blends with the community through landscaping and materials. Ornamental fencing around a single entrance protects students and provides maximum security and oversight from the administration building. Serving 650 students, ES #9 alleviates overcrowding at six regional elementary schools. Just 12 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the area is primarily Hispanic or Latino, and 59% of households have children under the age of 18. The school is one of several new public buildings in the City of South Gate and will host after-school and summer community events. Ultimately, ES #9 is a community resource that will unite the neighborhood on a state-of-the-art campus.
