The library is housed in the old multipurpose building and designed to revitalize the existing glulam arches. This element became the brainchild to integrate curves into the room as a way of defining areas. A long curved "canopy" floats above the entry to create interest; the circulation desk and research shelves flanking the entry, complements that canopy by curving outwards to further define that path. An acoustic cloud floats above the research area and a 2nd curved element appears to cantilever from behind the circulation desk.

Additional Info:

The Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School was an aging facility built in the early 1960's. An aggressive plan was conceived to revive the existing facility and refocus the educational direction for the facility. The new library design concept creates a learning core, a safe haven for study and provides spaces for focused group gatherings. The new library was transformed into a technology infused environment, designed to accommodate current and future infrastructure.
The building system has been designed to exceed current state energy standards and provide optimal opportunities through interactive displays and teaching elements.
