Collaboration and communication are central to science education. At The Walter and Leonore Annenberg Science Center, the “spine of light” – a dramatic central space created with a sweeping curved wall of zinc and large panes of glass – serves to foster informal communication between teachers and students. Light-filled and airy, it’s a place for kids to gather, share ideas and “hang out” with fellow students and teachers, outside the formal classroom setting. A bold architectural gesture, the “spine of light” identifies the building on campus and bridges an internal gap between the two academic portions of the science center, naturally encouraging students and teachers to meet while traveling from one class to another.

Comments:
"This element emphasizes how a space can create an assemblage of students, and inspire learning outside of the classroom. It also creates such a dramatic landmark that students will recognize, and remember throughout their education."
