Designed by Legat Architects, the Colin Powell Middle School unifies students from four communities. The 122,000-sq.-ft. facility enables Elementary School District 159 to convert its four K-8 schools into K-5 schools. The wall across from the learning resource center features a 19-ft. by 7-ft. mural that highlights the district’s history. Every student in the district helped decorate its tiles. A gold thread - gold and purple are the middle school's colors - runs through the tiles, which represent the colors of the district's other schools. A blue sky and prairie grass, consistent with the region, set the background. This artwork reflects an important goal: bringing the district's four other schools and community together into one destination point. "We now have a destination point that every student in our district will experience," says Dr. Eric A. King, superintendent. Additional Info: Symbolizes district and its community coming together. Portrays district history through silkscreen images and quotations. Echoes school design concepts.
