The Village Community School is a 300 student K-8 private school in Greenwich Village that occupies an 1878 Victorian Gothic style former parochial school . Having outgrown their facility by the late 1990's, the school decided to build new classrooms, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose auditorium, and outdoor play space on an adjacent corner site. Programming involved interviews with all constituencies of the VCS community. Matching the old in height, width, and materials, the new building is designed to fit comfortably in the neighborhood. Aligning floor plates with the adjoining building provides generous ceiling heights and window openings. Interior spaces are warm, intimate, and flexible, reflecting the educational philosophy of the school.
