Alice Fong Yu is a historically significant elementary school that was renovated and expanded with the addition of a 15,000-sq.-ft. middle school complex to create the first Chinese language immersion school in the country. The primary colors red and yellow were used, not only because they worked nicely with the existing brick building, but because of their cultural significance. The circles on the gates (pictured) allude to the circular entrance, or moon gate, seen in traditional Chinese architecture. A moon gate is traditionally used to create the sense of entering a special place. The new facility contains administration, classrooms, computer and science labs, a gymnasium/multipurpose room, and support spaces.
