MPA worked with non-profit organizations and volunteer labor to provide this community space in a wooded natural preserve which is part of the 54 acre Roy Wilkins Park in Southern Queens. As one approaches the pavilion from the path, it appears to have a closed façade. As one nears, the façade opens up, becoming transparent, and providing views of the two level multi-functional interior. The path then becomes a ramp which leads the visitor through the pavilion, past the work area, and onto an overlook into the woods beyond. The view is framed by the ground sloping down and the roof opening up. Comments: The curved ceiling panels above create a sense of movement, mimicking the traffic of students below. This appears to be a high energy space when the students are traveling through. Joel@schooldesigner.com | Other
