This new elementary school design is based on solar orientation for enhanced daylighting potential in the two-story academic portion of the building. This orientation results in a strong street presence for visitors, and the 900 students attending the school will enjoy a playful combination of two different colors of glass. This high performance facility has been certified with the US Green Building Council as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver building. Additional Info: High performance features include a preserved area of open area space equal to the building´s footprint full cutoff exterior lighting fixtures (Dark Sky compliant) native and adaptive plant species that do no require permanent irrigation waterless and water-efficient plumbing fixtures that contribute to a 41 percent reduction in water use HVAC&R equipment that is free of CFCs, HCFCs, and halons a modeled reduction in energy use of 27 percent FSC certified wood doors and sports flooring manufactured building materials that contain recycled content as well as low-emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, and carpets CO2, temperature, and humidity monitoring systems and outdoor views for 94 percent of the building spaces. Comments: This school is the first building in Hanover County, Virginia to make a public commitment to high performance design.
