One Story about Two Stories![]() Nadel310.826.2100 Los Angeles, CA 90025 The design of this 52,905sf school takes its cue from its tight 3.04-acre urban site, and is responsive to the character of the surrounding neighborhood. Massing and articulation are reflective of the residential neighborhood on one side and a major cross-town artery on the other. Efficient planning of functions to minimize the building footprint at the ground plane was necessary for the outdoor playground space requirements, resulting in a two-story scheme for the classrooms. Additional Info: On a 3.04 acre tight urban site just west of downtown Los Angeles, this 610-seat K-5 elementary school includes 26 classrooms, a 2,300sf library, a 3,800sf multipurpose room, a kitchen, administration offices, a large playground, and surface parking. The project was designed as one single structure to avoid costly building separation. The school was designed to take full advantage of daylighting opportunities, with passive solar shading devices, broad lightshelves and overhangs on south, east, and west facing classrooms. The project meets CHPS (California High Performance Schools) standards and was designed to Savings by Design utility incentive standards, earning LAUSD a $30,000 rebate for energy efficiency. | Elementary School: Whilshire Park Elementary School | Los Angeles, CA![]() ![]() ![]() Photos: Paul Bielenberg |
