Built on Vinalhaven Island off the coast of Maine, Vinalhaven School serves the small community's K-12 students. Additionally, the 57,000 sqft school opens its doors and resources to island residents, making the school a center for the community. The modern auditorium provides the main stage for the island's cultural events. Additional Info: The overall design of this school incorporated separate “islands” for K-2, 3-5, middle school, high school, and a discovery island. These islands branch off the centrally located library – the heart of the school. Natural finishes and environment friendly “green” materials were used wherever possible. The design had to account for material delivery and timing constraints, as all materials not found on the island had to be delivered by boat.
