The design of Atascocita Spring Elementary School was based upon a community initiative, where community members participated in months of meetings to determine what the green and sustainability goals for all future projects for Humble Independent School district would be, focusing on the best environments for learning is always the top priority in the district. Taking the recommendations of their active and vocal community groups, the district embarked on the design of Atascocita Springs Elementary School (ASES).
Opened in the Fall of 2010, ASE was constructed to the criteria for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The campus was designed for CHPS verification (Collaborative for High Performance Schools). The school is expected to become a prototype for other districts to create sustainable and high-performance buildings. The two-story, 113,895 square foot building is designed to serve 950 students in K through grade 5. Architecturally, the school is aligned along a double-volume main street artery with classroom wings to one side and community areas such the library, cafeteria and gymnasium on the other side.
