As part of an initiative to designate a true sense of place for the Middle School on the K-12 campus, the “Open Commons” represents the heart of activity for the transitioning students. Vertical connectivity is achieved both physically and visually; not only capitalizing on the warm weather climate of the region, but also transforming each of the floors into a multi-use environment activated by lockers, conference rooms, galleries, accented with spectacular views of the campus.

Additional Info:

The "Open Commons" serves as the core spatial element for a new design for the Cairo American College Middle School and Middle School / High School Library building, a project implemented as part of a larger master plan for a campus supporting an enrollment of 1,400 students, grades Pre-K through 12.

CAC strives to represent at every level, a true commitment to regionally-sensitive sustainability. The design of the new Middle School and Library building is an unparalleled opportunity to exhibit and instill in students a sense of responsibility to their environment. In addition to incorporating more operationally advantageous practices such as daylighting, solar water heating and photovoltaic and UV screening panels over open air collaboration spaces, the project provides unique teaching tools within the design of the school including an Egyptian Tortoise farm and outdoor classroom space for protecting and learning about the local endangered species. Visual and spatial clues as a student enters the facility reinforce the important goals and activities set forth to honor a student’s time. Informal collaboration spaces establish the importance of interaction amongst students and with teachers. The ‘gateway’ into the Middle School is enhanced by its internal and external surroundings highlighting the approach as a meaningful experience and one unique only to the Middle School. The ‘link’ between Middle School and High School is suggested in the Library’s connective program; preparing students for what lies ahead.
