As followers of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of the Environment, the Sisters were strongly committed to the environmentally responsible renovation of their 300-student high school, while preserving its historic architectural character. A 28% reduction in energy consumption was achieved through heat recovery from exhaust air, individual controls in each classroom, and recycled roof water used in the evaporative cooler. Most remarkable was the reuse of materials 300 doors and an acre of hardwood flooring, trim and cabinetry were reused from the existing school. The project achieved a LEED Gold certification.

Additional Info:

A post occupancy evaluation of the project one year after occupancy revealed that the indoor air quality measures taken during design and construction and the green cleaning program that were adopted had dramatically improved the Sisters´ health as evident through fewer hospitalizations, fewer respiratory complaints and reduced use of oxygen.
