A Star in Hollywood![]() Perkins + Will213.270.8474 Los Angeles, CA 90017 Helen Bernstein High School maximizes its compact urban site by utilizing multi-story buildings which address the scale of the adjacent freeway while preserving open green space for the surrounding dense community. The highly flexible plan allows for internal organization into smaller learning communities, and showcases views of the surrounding mountains and the Hollywood sign, projecting a strong new image for the LAUSD. Additional Info: A 12.4-acre parcel located at the crossing of Sunset Boulevard and the Hollywood Freeway (Hwy. 101) forms the canvas for this new 225,000 SF high school for the Los Angeles Unified School District. The school serves grades 9-12 from the dense surrounding urban community, incorporates a continuation school and is designed for 2,625 students. The six-story complex is massed as a 3-story classroom “bar”, bridging over a base of shared public spaces and a parking garage. An outdoor plaza acts as the social heart of the campus. The buildings are solidly massed along the eastern (freeway) edge, forming an urban face to the city, while the scale descends to the residential neighborhood on the south and breaks down into a more village-like series of pieces on the west to address the plaza. This planning concept allows two-thirds of the site to remain open for playfields, Materials: Corrugated Steel Panels Concrete Masonry Units Ceramic Tile Galvanized Orso Grill | High School: Helen Bernstein High School | Hollywood, CA![]() ![]() ![]() Photos: Magnus Stark |
