In architecture “prototype” implies a standard design to be placed throughout regardless of the site parameters, a “one-size fits all” concept. Most prototype schools consist of a large footprint offering very little flexibility when it comes to site integration. This issue is what the Clark County School District faces owning property that does not accommodate its current prototype design.

As architects, we asked ourselves tough questions; how to create a prototype elementary school that is site specific, allows various site configurations, always provides proper orientation, and ultimately allows varied building aesthetics? A prototype that provides flexibility?

Our solution was to create a kit of parts to allow for flexible site integration. With this concept, the classroom components are arranged to accommodate various site shapes and sizes. This concept allows the buildings to be situated to take advantage of the correct solar orientation; allowing for optimum daylighting in all classrooms. By creating the proper orientation, we have a sustainable prototype that embodies energy efficiency. Making a positive impact upon the earth, the kit of parts’ flexibility allows for a sustainable approach to site planning and layout strategies. In addition, the classrooms have been designed as a stackable module; making a two-story scheme an option for smaller properties.

Because of the mild climate most of the year, the design capitalizes on the interstitial space by developing an outdoor extension of the classrooms. These outdoor educational spaces create dynamic learning environments for the students. Despite being a prototype design, each school courtyard will develop a unique aesthetic as the administrators, staff and students will get to personalize their space by selecting various menu items --games, history path, wind turbines, photovoltaic demonstration, amphitheaters, theme gardens, etc. The simple architecture becomes the framework to the fun and inspiring outdoor courtyard elements.
