In the design of a school for the 21st Century developed from a historic urban building, designers retained the well-proportioned, light-filled classroom spaces with high ceilings and large operable windows to maximize daylight. Maintaining the existing 10-foot high doors and transoms, as well as new openings cut into masonry bearing walls allow light to spill into the corridors and other interior spaces. Modern systems were added throughout the school and integrated into the existing architecture, providing individual control and energy efficiency while not detracting from or interfering with the height and light of the space.

Comments:
"A refreshing response to an age old problem of renovating older schools. The alternate approach of reducing the window openings and adding a ped acoustical ceiling would have made the classrooms mundane at best. Instead, these rooms are bright and cheerful!" Joel@schooldesigner.com
