The goal of the design was to relate the shape and construction of the classroom to the program, which educates children in 12 subject areas, including biology, literature, economics, earth science and mathematics. Built of metal studs and layers of ¼” flexible gypsum board, portions of the wall construction are visible through a plexiglass window. The shape of the room is biomorphic, which relates to the areas of earth science and biology, while also being in contrast to the angular geometry of the building, to relate to the mathematics aspects of the program. The children have their own horizon at 3’-6” AFF, via a ledge on the outside of the room and the angle of the wall. The curve also sets up a waiting area for parents. But first and foremost, it is a fun shape. Credits: Designed by David L. Businelli, AIA Materials: Metal studs ¼” Flexible gypsum board Plexi-glass | Classroom
