Hailed as a “high performance school for the new millennium,” the new 1600-student Skyline High School’s design is based around preserving the site’s natural wooded areas and creating a forward-thinking high tech environment for students. Designers and school administrators agreed that the school needed a symbol. The solution was a wind turbine, located at the school’s highest point, that would not only have a symbolic impact, but would also serve as a learning tool for students.

Additional Info:

The sweeping, sinuous blades are connected to a generator, which feeds power to the Magnet Program labs. At these locations, students can monitor the turbine’s generation of energy, answering such questions as, “What time of year does wind generate the most energy?” or “How many wind turbines would provide adequate power for a classroom, a school or a community?” The soundless turbine also provides movement on the exterior of the building. A standard school building is static, save for a flag waving on a flagpole. The wind turbine provides a dynamic, moving visual on an otherwise motionless structure. The school is currently registered with the United States Green Building Council and the team will apply for LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification upon the building’s completion.
