Develop an entry plaza that acts as a transitional space from the existing parking lot, into the school and the athletic fields beyond. Connect the two main enrties into the high school and create a pedestrian zone for circulation so people do not have to walk through the parking lot to access either entry. Design a building with sustainable materials and follows LEED standards. Additional Info: David Douglas High School used to be a suburban high school. It has over 3,000 students and continues because housing is affordable in the district. The campus is about 47 acres and has 4 major academic buildings. Because Title 9 requires equal access to athletic programs, the school is tight on space. The classroom addition need to take a minimal amount of space. A two story structure met the need. It is placed next to the gymnasium and the massing helps minimize the size of the gym that is adjacent to residential housing. Sun screens help minimize heat gain in the classrooms. Natural ventilation and an economizer cycle on the HVAC system further cut down on energy usage. Indirect lighting in the classrooms w/ sensors control lighting levels, again to save on energy. Main entries are identified with large expanses of glass and aluminum frames that create an inviting openness. Materials: Brick veneer & corrugated steel siding - Mutual Material/ AEP Span; Structural steel frame w/ concrete floors; Aluminum window frames w/ tinted insulated glazing: U.S. Aluminum | High School: David Douglas High School | Portland, OR![]() ![]() ![]() |
