Once an abandoned food store, this project presented a unique opportunity for the District: transform a boring box into an inviting and dynamic space to house preschool, early childhood, Head Start and special need students. Drawing inspiration from a child’s shape-sorting learning toy, the design utilizes color and shapes in the building as a functional way-finding tool and also creates a suitable environment for teaching children. Each entry to a major space in the center has its own shape, color and identity. The renovation of the heavy aggregate tilt-wall front elevation was also challenging. Metal panels, split-faced concrete block and a curved wall with glazed accent brick soften the façade and establish new entries into the facility. A second level and a separate entry were added for vocational, administrative, and staff development spaces. Previously an eyesore, this recycled facility was transformed into a multifunctional and positive facility for the community and all users. Credits: All Photos by Chad M.
