WWCOT took over the design of Edward R. Roybal Learning Center in 2003. The firm developed a plan that reduced the campus’ size, addressed building safety, and created park space. Forensic mitigation procedures enabled reuse of existing buildings, so the new facilities were made architecturally compatible with paint in earth tones, producing continuity between the buildings, park and adjacent hill. A courtyard creates outdoor learning space that’s also the fault setback.

Additional Info:

Set in downtown Los Angeles and named after one of California’s first Latino congressmen, Edward R. Roybal Learning Center can serve up to 2,800 students. The scope of WWCOT’s work encompassed:

• Approximately 100,000 square feet of new construction, including a 500-seat classroom building or “shared learning facility,” library, auditorium, music and drama classrooms, and food services;
• Renovation of classrooms, gym and parking facilities in the existing buildings, which were converted into six 500-seat academies;
• Demolition of two unfinished structures;
• Addition of outdoor courtyards; and
• An adjacent 10-acre community park.

The new classroom building has outdoor corridors to provide students with immediate wayfinding and orientation, as well as an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air as they move about. And as an added bonus, the single-loaded corridors help reduce air-conditioning equipment costs. The library and auditorium were designed for public use after school hours, providing the urban neighborhood with cultural resources and a cost benefit to the district.
