Set amongst Banksia trees, the natural surroundings provided inspiration for a set of spatial relationships that were incorporated into the Banksia Grove Primary School´s masterplan. The scheme utilizes new models of learning delivery - outdoor learning, withdrawal and project spaces as well as recognition of the potential of the architecture and landscape. Access to the outdoors provides daylight, which enhances alertness and has psychological benefits such as relieving stress. If classrooms are accessible to the outdoors it allows nature to be incorporated into the curriculum and provides additional learning settings for students.

Additional Info:

There is increasing evidence that student learning and behavioural outcomes are related to the physical environment. The school grounds themselves are used as a learning tool, as is the surrounding community. This approach requires new spatial arrangements that provide a variety of formal and informal, adaptable and flexible learning and social settings within easy reach of staff and students. The following landscape zones throughout the school are envisaged *Banksia Groves - retention of existing groves as important nodes *Community Gardens - community involvement and ownership *Native Grass Garden - planting and study of local flora Culinary Garden - planting and use of culinary herbs and plants.
